Capital League: Surprise results headline round 9

CAPITAL LEAGUE: SURPRISE RESULTS HEADLINE ROUND 9

CAPITAL LEAGUE: ROUND 9 – REVIEW

Monaro Panthers were the big winners after a weekend of upset results in the Capital League on sunny Saturday afternoon in Canberra. Whilst the Panthers were busy despatching struggling O’Connor Knights, not one of three chasing teams managed a win allowing Monaro to increase their lead at the top of the table to a big seven points after eight rounds.

The Panthers did just what was required off them against the O’Connor Knights, rarely forced into anything more than a routine afternoon’s work to claim the three points against a gallant, but out-gunned Knights team. With Zach Knight controlling the midfield, and scoring a goal, the visitors always looked the more likely with Vele Dukoski and Nathan Walker both finding the net for the sixth time this season.

ANU FC slipped further behind Monaro following a goal-less draw away to Canberra Olympic. The reigning League Champions created plenty of opportunities against Olympic but, with a depleted squad, were unable to find the crucial breakthrough. The championship chasers ended the match with ten men as well following the dismissal of Denny Noor for receiving a brace of yellow cards.

Narrabundah missed a golden opportunity to put pressure on the top four when it was held to a 0-0 draw by bottom of the table ADFA Vikings at RMC Duntroon on Tuesday evening. The Bulls dominated the game and passed up a great chance to score when the otherwise outstanding Richie Curran missed from the penalty spot. It was hard luck on a player who had dictated the game and showed some quality touches throughout. As it was the Vikings breathed a sigh of relief at the let off and held on for a draw, picking up only their second point of the season in the process.

However, the Bulls recovered from this disappointment to record one of the results of the season as they travelled to Woden Park and defeated White Eagles 2-0. A double from Liam Boyle saw off the challenge of the Eagles and allowed the Bulls to move into fifth place, a mere three points behind Tuggeranong United who cling to that fourth, and final, semi-final spot.

That Tuggeranong are still fourth and not higher up the ladder was down to a remarkable display from Queanbeyan City who saw off the title-chasers 4-2 at the Riverside Stadium. Ciaran Rayment snaffled the opening goal for Tuggeranong but Lukas Fuhrmann forced home the equaliser for City, Nikolce Noveski then curled in a beauty to put the hosts ahead at the interval. Mark Di Bitonto levelled for the visitors in the second stanza before a brace of goals from Nick Levanat, showing a real poachers instinct, saw City home to a valuable three points.
