Men’s Masters- Saints Match Report Rnd 8

Round 8:                11am, Sunday 31 May 2015

Team:                      GUNGAHLIN vs SAINTS

Location:               Harrison 101, Nullabor Ave off Flemington Rd, HARRISON

On a brilliant but very windy sunny day in Canberra, the Saints 14-man squad assembled in meeting their next opposition in the form of, GUNGAHLIN Masters, at their home-ground of Harrison 101 (Gungahlin).

The early exchanges, SAINTS played very well into a strong wind. Gungahlin made a few incursions into Saints territory but this was ably repelled by the back four of Leslie HERBERT, Sam SMITH, Dean ACHESON and Anthony CORDER. In the main this was a very dominant Saints display. There was some excellent wave-after-wave of attacks on the Gungahlin goal from the forward duo of Luke SANDERS and Martin ZACHARA, with Glen BRIMSON and David ARELLANO controlling the centre midfield.  The midfield of Vincent HAN, Scott CALLINAN, Tony CIUFFETELLI and Angelo BALLON kept strong pressure on the Gungahlin back four. With the injection of Gino BALLON into the forward line, led to strong pressure on the Gungahlin goal. (There were a couple of close shaves – namely the back pass from Leslie to supposedly either Sam Smith or Pat Madrid, led to a penalty area scramble which was won by Pat MADRID, defusing the situation. Thanks for saving my skin there, Pat.)

Halftime score: 0-0

The second half saw Saints pile on the pressure with some excellent interplay. At this stage Gungahlin was making only few incursions into Saints territory. With Gungahlin stacking their defence and the wind playing some part in our attacks and unfortunately, misses on the Gungahlin goal. In this half Pat MADRID pulled off a couple of one-on-one saves to keep our winning hopes alive. Unfortunately, no goals eventuated.

Fulltime score: 0-0
