NPL18 & NPL20 Review Round 9

PLAYSTATION 4 NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUES: CAPITAL FOOTBALL
UNDER-18
ROUND 9 – REVIEW

Belconnen United moved back into title contention at the top of the PlayStation 4® National Premier Leagues under-18 competition by arresting their recent run of poor form with a narrow, but deserved, 2-1 win over visiting Monaro Panthers at McKellar Park on Saturday morning. The Blue Devils reduced the deficit on league leaders Tuggeranong United to a single point ahead of Tuggeranong’s clash with Gungahlin on Sunday thanks to goals from Wilbert Jr Dandadzi and Domenic Giampaolo. The Panthers were brave in defeat and will be disappointed not to have gained a point from the match with the loss leaving them in eighth with four points a scant reward for some good performances this season. Their goal came from the increasingly prolific Mitchell Jervis-Hamilton, his sixth of the campaign to date. The Blue Devils’ three points proved doubly worthwhile when Tuggeranong United slumped to a surprise 2-3 loss to Gungahlin United at Gungahlin Enclosed. Lee Hynes scored a double for the league leaders but his brace was matched by Tony Maddafari for the hosts. Jamie Vearncombe slotted his third of the campaign however to make sure that Gungahlin claimed the victory. Canberra FC took advantage to close the gap on Tuggeranong to a point with a game in hand after they defeated Woden-Weston FC 2-0. A double from Gareth Povel did the damage for the reds that look like genuine title contenders at the halfway stage of the campaign. Meanwhile ACTAS made sure that they are in the mix for the top four places with a well-fought 4-2 win away to Tigers FC. Amir Adam and Teddy Benson scored for the home team but the Academy was too strong and eased their way to success. Bul Juach struck twice for ACTAS, moving onto a dozen goals for the season, with the other strikes coming from Leo Mazis and Ben Obst.

PLAYSTATION 4 NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUES: CAPITAL FOOTBALL
UNDER-20
ROUND 9 – REVIEW

Monaro Panthers sounded out a warning that they are serious title contenders in the PlayStation 4® National Premier Leagues under-20 competition as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Belconnen United at McKellar Park on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers have recovered well from a poor start to the season and are steadily shifting up the table, leapfrogging the Blue Devils with this victory which was sealed via goals from Darian McGarry-Watson, his third of the season, and a first goal of the campaign from Blake Randell. Kieran Mattress netted for the Blue Devils but they were unable to secure a share of the spoils. On Sunday Woden-Weston FC caused the upset of the season so far as they stormed Deakin Stadium to come away with a 2-0 success over high-flying Canberra FC. The visitors withstood an early FC barrage and snuck into the lead by half time after a gloriously taken finish from Deng Padiet. After the break FC continued to look for the equaliser with Andy Rakic prominent in midfield however Woden-Weston killed them off with a second as Lachlan Hunter reacted quickest to a shot that rebounded off the crossbar to tuck home from close range and give Woden-Weston their second win of the season. Over at Gungahlin Enclosed Tuggeranong United pushed their way back into title contention with a 2-1 win over their hosts, Gungahlin United. Golden Boot leader Eddie Coggan netted his seventh of the season for Tuggeranong with Ryan Cawley bagging his second as the visitors led 2-0. A late goal from Alex Gelonesi gave Gungahlin some hope with a late goal but, by then, Tuggeranong had done more than enough to earn the three points.  At Nijong Oval Tigers FC suffered their first loss of the season as Senior NTC increased their lead at the top of the table to five points. Despite goals from Lucas Montana, Simon Noveski and Jared Tonini, the Tigers were unable to cope with the fluidity of movement and slick passing of the NTC team who looked superb in the final third. Oliver Corbitt made hay with a hat-trick, joining Coggan on seven for the season at the top of the charts, with further goals from Asante Addai, his sixth of the year and a Tigers own goal.
