Brad is an Astrophysicist/Cosmologist, and is currently a Fellow at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Mt. Stromlo Observatory at the Australian National University.

He has a hand in a variety of things but the majority of his work involves Exploding Stars, called Supernova, and Cosmology, the study of the Universe.

A certain type of Supernova, called a Type Ia, can be used as a standard candle that can trace our Universe’s history.

Brad is involved with a number of Supernova surveys. He has been working on the ESSENCE Project, The CfA Supernova Search, Carnegie Supernova Project, and using Mt. Stromlo’s new SkyMapper telescope. He is one of the leads of the Kepler Extra-Galactic Survey, KEGS, a Kepler Space Telescope Key Program, to understand why and how stars blow. He is also leading a project to build a network of ultraviolet telescopes in the upper atmosphere which are being built at Mt. Stromlo.

Brad originally hails from Sacramento, California, USA. He completed his undergraduate studies in Physics, Philosophy, and Theology at the University of Notre Dame and his PhD at Mt. Stromlo Observatory, ANU.

In addition research, he frequently gives talks to school groups and the general public about Astronomy and has regular segments on various radio stations talking about Astronomy news and events. You can even catch him on TV news shows.

Among other things, he has developed a series of Astronomy coins, in conjunction with the Royal Australian Mint, consulted on science fiction movies, advised on Astronomy-themed art projects, and has been featured in specials on the National Geographic Channel. He is currently in the process of writing his first popular book and producing a massive open online course.

Stephen is an Olympian and past elite road cycling competitor. His record includes:

In the 14 Grand Tours Stephen rode in, he managed to finish each one.

At the Tour de France, Stephen was the captain of Festina, the 1994 winning team, and winner of Teams Classification with O.N.C.E. in 1990.

After retirement, in 1996, he became Vice President of Cycling Australia.

Stephen was a founding member and a board member of the Amy Gillett Foundation.

Stephen is now a cycling ambassador and works for We Ride Australia, a campaign to increase cycling and reduce carbon output.
